Presenting the Sulis Wand and Ark - High Power UVC

There are many places advertising UVC sanitisation products, but unless they’re using the right wavelength, with the right LEDs, they are not doing the job. We use the best available LEDs to ensure our products live up to their purpose.

Why have you created UV-C Products

During the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, we set out to discover what was the best method of sterilisation and see if we could bring that technology to a wider audience. This would help businesses provide a safer environment for both their staff and their customers. We looked at industries where sanitization was paramount and what tools they used. The best solution available was UVC to destroy viruses and bacteria, but this came at a cost.

With the recent advancement of LED technology, we saw an opportunity to use that same method of sterilisation for other businesses. After being awarded a grant by the Welsh Government, we began working on prototypes for what we thought would be the best products to provide protecting against viruses and bacteria.

Introducing the Sulis Wand and Ark

The Sulis Wand is designed to be used in locations where the article to be sanitised is either too large to fit into the Sulis Ark or is in a fixed location (Large surfaces for example). With it’s extendable body, it allows you cleanse surfaces that are difficult to reach.

It contains 12 UVC LED’s and can be passed over the object that requires decontamination. The UVC LED head measures 250 x 40 mm and be either in the horizontal or vertical plain. It is operated by mains power, ensuring maximum output from the UVC LED’s.

As UVC Light is harmful  and should at all times be kept away from human skin and eyes, we supply certified UVC LED safety eye-wear with every Sulis Wand purchased

The Sulis Ark is design to sanitise various small articles, such as hotel room cards, paper documents, keys and personal items. The articles are placed on an internal shelf which is transparent to UVC light. With 6 UVC LED’s below and above the shelf, thus allowing both sides of the article to be sanitised in one process.

The internal dimensions are 215 x 175 mm. It will be fitted with a visual display that shows the duration of the sanitation process and audible alert for when the process is completed. It also will be fitted with an auto cut off if the lid of the Sulis Ark is opened during the sanitation process, thereby protecting the user from the UVC light.

What is UV-C Technology?

Sunlight contains three types of UV. First there is UVA, which makes up the vast majority of the ultraviolet radiation reaching the Earth’s surface. It’s capable of penetrating deep into the skin and is thought to be responsible for up to 80% of skin ageing, from wrinkles to age spots.

Next there’s UVB, which can damage the DNA in our skin, leading to sunburn and eventually skin cancer (recently scientists have discovered that UVA can also do this). Both are reasonably well known, and can be blocked out by most good sun creams.

Then there is UVC. A more energetic wavelength of light which is particularly good at destroying genetic material – whether in humans or viral particles. Luckily, most of us are unlikely to have ever encountered any as it’s filtered out by ozone in the atmosphere long before it reaches the Earth’s surface.

Or that was the case, at least, until scientists discovered that they could harness UVC to kill microorganisms. This is done by taking that energy to inactivate a wide range of pathogens by disrupting the DNA of microorganisms, rendering them harmless.

Why Our UV-C Products Are Different

Traditional, organisations have used UV germicidal lamps to cleanse surfaces. With the advancement of LED technology over the last few years, we are able to bring that same method of sanitisation to a wider audience. UVC is a dry sanitisation method of cleansing surfaces without the use of chemicals or wet liquids. In many businesses there are common areas, or receptions, which are impractical to isolate while chemicals are used. Chemicals can also damage fabrics and materials over time, needing them to be replaced regularly.

In sectors such as hospitality, transportation, care homes or any business that are open to the public, UVC provides a better option over wet sanitisers or chemicals. Since UVC is a dry sanitisation method, surfaces are ready to be used immediately after use. The LEDs, will also last for 3000 hours, preventing the expensive costs or re-ordering sanitisers or chemicals.
